September 15, 2011, 12:32 am
Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales is gearing up for Boktoberfest, a daylong festival with offers free admission on Oct. 15. Among the features will be a biergarten, German food, tree climbing, face painting, craft and seasonal beers, prize drawings, live entertainment and 40 vendors selling plants. Boktoberfest hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. UF-IFAS Cooperative Extension Service agent emeritus Tom MacCubbin will speak at 2 p.m.
Live entertainment will include Alpine Express (pictured), which uses long Swiss alphorns, a wooden xylophone and the ”singing saw.” Other entertainment involves Barely Metro, Gypsy Wind, Lagerheads, Juggles the Clown and, of course, Bok’s 60-bell Singing Tower carillon.
In addition, Bok is enouraging folks to run for mayor of Boktoberfest by submitting campaign videos. The winner will be determined by online election and receives privileges with a “Backstage at Boktoberfest” pass. The mayor will officiate the biergarten opening and have other duties. Bok wants candidates to be creative, suggesting the wear of lederhosen or dancing a polka.
Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark about 55 miles southwest of Orlando. For more information, go to www.boktoberfest.com or call 863-676-1408.
