FireFest 2011

Learn about local fire department history with up-close looks at antique fire trucks and fire equipment. Test your skills as a firefighter and race with your team to hit a target with water. Compete with friends in firefighter gear-dressing challenges or hose cart races. Meet local firefighters, watch demonstrations, and learn about fire safety while enjoying food, crafts, activities, and more throughout Heritage Square and the History Center. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Outdoor festivities free. Adventure Night at the Museum Camp-In

Grab your lassoes, dig up your dino-mite gear, and tell your mummies – the History Center comes to life when you spend a night at the museum! 7 p.m.-8 a.m. Grades K-5. $25 per child for Members; $35 per child for non-members. An evening snack and breakfast are included. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Museum staff chaperones. Call (407) 836-8580 to register. Presented by Orlando Federal Credit Union.

The Great Toy Build Off

Assemble a team or go it alone to design and build an object of your choice in two hours, using LEGO® Bricks, Erector Sets, or Tinker Toys. Points will be awarded for originality, creativity, resourcefulness, teamwork, and overall presentation. Overall winner and winner in each category: Family, Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and Adult. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Space is limited. Free to participate. “USA 101: A Guide to America’s Iconic Places, Events, and Festivals”

In a new book from National Geographic, award-winning travel writer Gary McKechnie uses his quick wit and impeccable taste in roadside attractions to distill the “American experience” into 101 quintessential destina­tions that celebrate our country’s history and culture in all its quirky diversity. An avid lover of motorcycle riding, McKechnie shares his unique perspective on America using his book “USA 101” as a road map to help you get started on your own voyage of discovery during this special History Center event. McKechnie is also the author of the best-selling book, “Great American Motorcycle Tours,” for which he won one of his two Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards.
