Thursday will kick off three days of celebration and open-house events that will involve the construction of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The boosters of the project say they plan to spend a generous $35,000 of their own funds on the event. Arts officials say they don’t have a final bottom line total for the events yet because each relies heavily on private and public donors. However, they say no taxpayers funds would be used, and most costs are expected to be covered from in-kind gifts. The $35,000 will be covered by donors, they said.
Entertainment for the events will include singer and actor Davis Gaines, an Orlando native who is known for his 2,000 performances in the title role of “Phantom of the Opera.” Other performers include the Orlando Ballet, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the national touring cast of “Hair.”
