Directed by: JAMES GUNN
USA, 2010, 96 MIN

With an unstoppable onslaught of humor and surreal absurdity, SUPER’s clever take on the DIY superhero genre is as wildly entertaining as Kick-Ass. No stranger to rebel filmmaking, James Gunn (Slither) delivers a smart and highly adrenalized action film complete with balls-out violence and audacious plot twists. Frank (Rainn Wilson) has lived “a life of humiliation and rejection.” A glutton for punishment, he reaches an all-time low when his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) is willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). But when the finger of God pries open his brain and endows it with sudden clarity, Frank decides to fight back under the guise of a makeshift superhero named Crimson Bolt. A bumbling and klunky mess who manages to make headlines, he attracts the attention of a young woman from the local comic book store (Ellen Page) who joins in on the fun as his sidekick, Boltie. Graphic novel beginners and seasoned fanboys alike will certainly agree that this darkly comic riff on the superhero film is sure to live up to its name.
