Turnpike closed after accident
March 3, 2011, 9:10 am
A motorcycle accident which occurred at around 6PM on Florida’s Turnpike has caused a temporary closure. The accident took place on the turnpike’s southbound lanes just south of the Orange Blossom Trail. The responding crews found that the motorcyclist was still trapped under the tandem axles of a semi tractor trailer. Paramedics tried to treat the patient while the remaining crews worked to find a way to lift the massive vehicle off of the patient.
Specialized equipment including large airbags was deployed after the accident. In addition, the crews requested the use of a wrecker capable of lifting heavy duty vehicles over 20,000 pounds. It was able to lift the front of the truck in to the air until the axles were off of the patient and crews were able to remove the victim. It took fire crews 70 minutes to remove the patient, who was transported by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center. All Southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike had to be shut down for nearly 3 hours to handle this accident.
