Gators head to the Elite 8

March 25, 2011, 5:56 am

On Thursday night the Gators found a way to score timely baskets and shut down BYU star Jimmer Fredette in the extra session as 2 seed Florida defeated BYU 83-74 in the Sweet 16 in New Orleans Arena on Thursday. It was strangely similar to last year when the Gators lost to BYU in double overtime in the NCAA Tournament, only this year the outcome played in Florida’s favor. They advanced to the final game of the Southeast Regional on Saturday thanks a career night for senior Alex Tyus who added 19 points and 17 rebounds. They punched their ticket to their first Elite 8 since 2007 where they will face the Butler Bulldogs who were victorious later in the night against Wisconsin. The winner of that game will head to Houston for the Final Four.
