Civil rights for felons up for Florida Senate discussion

On Thursday the Florida State Senate will vote on legislation that will assist ex-cons to get drivers licenses and other permits they need to gain future employment. Under the proposed bill, former convicts would no longer need their voting and other civil rights restored before they could receive a driver’s license, and any other permits needed to be hired in the public sector. Employment could still be denied though for public safety reasons. There is recent history on the subject that may work in the bill’s favor. The Florida Senate passed a similar bill last year, but it failed to pass in the House. Earlier this month, Governor Rick Scott and his cabinet voted to no longer allow automatic restoration of rights for non-violent offenders.
