February 8, 2011, 8:05 am
An Orlando teenager was lying on his bed, watching TV and playing with his 9 mm. pistol at about 8:30 p.m. when it mistakingly discharged. After the incident, his 12-year-old sister got help by calling 911. The report states that the bullet went through the scrotum and lodged in his right upper thigh. “I shot myself by accident,” the 17-year-old boy said to the local police, “Get an ambulance.” Orlando firefighters transported the teen by ambulance to Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. The teen’s aunt responded to the hospital but police were unable to find the boy’s mother. Florida State law prohibits anyone under the age of 18 to possess a loaded gun unless participating in legal hunting or shooting activities and is accompanied by an adult. Because of this, the police department is recommending that the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office charge the teen with unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
